The rain falling on the good and the wicked as a good place to start in discussing why good things happen to bad people. And you're right to shift the dialogue from "merit" to mercy (forgoing deserved punishment) and grace (giving undeserved gift). It's had to believe that God is both active in the world (in love and sending Christ) and yet also allows horrible things to happen. But whatever happens, God is with us, and does not abandon us, whatever befalls us or whatever we do.
